Trying to build a Gantt chart out of Excel

Hi What I am trying to do here is just put a "bird on a wire" for several projects. I have done this before in a different method using sideways bar charts and hiding (or coloring clear) some of the bars.

We have several projects that all have the same several gates with different dates for each gate for each project. I am trying to get a chart that looks like this:

Dates on the bottom, projects on the left side, and the middle is all the "gates" in the place where their date is for that project.

I have included an excel file that shows you what I am trying to do on one tab, and two attempts on another tabs. (BTW one tab has a random number generator, that is just to get a bunch of data in there quickly, the fact that it keeps changing isn't important)

What I see in your "chart I am trying to get" is what I would call a dot plot -- where you have text categories on the vertical axis, numbers (dates are just numbers in Excel) along the horizontal axis, and points the show "number" vs. "text category" in the chart. I don't think any version of Excel has a built in dot plot chart, so we end up making one. The strategy I see is to create a "bar + scatter" combination chart, where the bar chart can provide the vertical categories and the scatter chart provides the plotted points inside the chart. Your "chart I am trying to get" does not show "gates" in the points, so I'm not sure how you want to distinguish between gates. In any case, I would suggest this tutorial as a good starting point towards building the dot plot, and we can figure out the details once we understand the basic idea: https://peltiertech.com/dot-plots-microsoft-excel/

Google for my tutorial "Gantt Charts in Microsoft Excel" on my blog peltiertech.com. Unfortunately, this forum isn't letting me post links.
