Possible to use the excel table date filter for other values such as text or numbers?

    Hi,

In the attached workbook I have made an example of a workbook I and other work with quite frequently. However, the workbook is quite big and contains a a lot more headers. When looking over another workbook I saw that the filters for dates had subcategories i.e year - month - day, and I wondered if it was possible to either keep the table as it is and use the date filter for other categories such as text or numbers or if there are any suggestions of how to maybe reformat the table for easier use and filtering.

The header "project" is a perfect example - right now it is only a formula dictating what row is what project, optimally you could choose this as a subcategory in another column filter i.e in the Number filter numbers 1-99 would have the category Project A and under categories would be the actual numbers 1-99.

I have experimented some with Pivot Charts but I could not format one to make them look any more clear than just a regular table.

    Administrative Note:

    Welcome to the forum.

Members will tailor the solutions they offer to the version (NOT a release number like 2201) of Office (Excel, NOT Windows) that you have. Please check that your forum profile is up-to-date in this respect. If you aren't sure, in Excel go to File | Account and report what it says below the MS logo at the top of that page. If your version is for Mac, please also state this. Thanks.

Re: Possible to use the excel table date filter for other values such as text or numbers?

    Hi,

Thanks for the welcome! Apologies for using the wrong version hopefully I have updated it to be more accurate!

    As for the attachment,

I see what you're getting at, as I wrote this rather late at work it may have been a bit unclear.
I think what you've done is that you divided up the date so they have the same filter options as numbers/text. Is it possible to instead have the same filter options for dates (column E) 2022-month-day for other columns containing numbers or text. I'll attach an image as I am finding it a little difficult to explain it clearly with words!

I am not sure what the issue is, but maybe slicers would give you the visual control for filtering that you require. In the attached, I've added slicers for the first three columns (select table - Insert | Slicers).

I have tried Slicers before but there are quite many headers that would need one - I am currently working with a checkbox version to try make it a bit more neat, thanks for the suggestsion!

OK, well look, I don't understand what you are trying to do, I'm afraid. You haven't managed to explain it to me in a way that allows me to visualise what you want to do, so I can't help. Sorry.

Thanks for your effort, apologies for not being very clear!

I've ended up going forward with using checkboxes for hiding certain columns which in the end makes the filtering a little easier in the list!
