Secondary Vertical Axis Populating in Reverse

    Hello,

I am creating a timeline using a stacked bar chart. This timeline will show scheduled vs actual.
My scheduled data is on the primary axis and the actual data is on the secondary axis. However, the secondary vertical axis is populating in reverse.

For example the actual data for Acrylic Mixing is showing up in Prophy Paste, Acrylic Filling in Packaging - Upper, etc.

I have found how to reverse the primary vertical axis, but not the secondary vertical axis. (I do not want the primary vertical axis reversed from it's current position)

Second question, how do I make the bars in the graph from the secondary axis appear behind the primary?

Excel file attached. Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi,

I think you missed to attach your example workbook.
A quick google search: "Use the Layout ribbon > Axes drop-down and show the secondary X axis. Format the secondary X axis to show in reverse order. Now both data series show in reverse order."

    Busk,

Thank you, I did see that and I attached the file.
I also did a google search as well. I think that answer is from 2011 or something, an older version of Excel. I am on Office 365. If not, I have no idea where the Layout ribbon is. My options are: File, Home, Insert, Page Layout, Formulas, Data, Review, View, Developer, QI Macros 2015, Help Chart Design, Format, QIMacros Chart. None of those have an Axis drop down. Also, it is stating the X axis (horizontal) axis, where I am looking for the Y (vertical) axis.

Re: Secondary Vertical Axis Populating in Reverse

In newer versions of Excel, I believe the "axes" formatting and information is in the "chart elements" pane, where you can choose which chart elements to show or hide. https://www.tutorialspoint.com/excel...s_elements.htm

As for putting the "secondary data series" behind the "primary data series", in my experience, Excel always charts the secondary axis data "in front" of the primary axis data. My usual thought when I want to put columns/bars behind/in front of other columns/bars would be to move the data series that are on the primary axis to the secondary axis, and the data series on the secondary axis to the primary axis. Would that be allowed in this case?

Re: Secondary Vertical Axis Populating in Reverse

Thank You MrShorty for your response. I will respond to your response in the same way Excel responds to my charting, in reverse order..... The easy of it is, yes, switching the data sets is allowed, and it did place the bars that I wanted up front and the others behind. However that still left me with the secondary axis data set, being in the reverse order.

However, I accidentally found the solution myself. I knew that there were axis elements in the chart elements pane, as you had pointed out. However I only ever saw option for the secondary horizontal axis, never a secondary vertical axis.

I must point out, this is the first time I ever used a secondary data set option.

Well, when I made the secondary data set, it automatically placed the horizontal labels for the secondary data across the bottom of the chart. In the end I knew I did not want that, and I knew I could hide that row eventually after I formatted everything correctly. This morning, after reading your response, I swapped the primary and secondary data sets, and decided hide the secondary data set labels, and did so. Then I went back into the chart elements pane to continue to attempt to figure out how to reverse order the vertical axis of the secondary data set, when I noticed that in the axis option, the Secondary Horizontal (Value) axis was now gone! I realized by hiding the labels, I was also hiding the option to change anything. So I went back and turned on both the secondary horizontal and vertical label sets and viola! The option to reverse order the secondary vertical axis was now there, and everything is right again!

So unhide labels, and options will appear!

Thank you all for getting me there!
