Average Calculation in Data Pivot Table Incorrect

    Hi, All.

I am new to Pivot Tables and I'm trying to work out why one of the averages in my Pivot Table (Pivot tab) is incorrect.

The averages in row 11 are all correct except for cell I11, which should be 75 and not 77.

Can someone shed some light on why all the averages apart from one are correct?

I have attached the spreadsheet with dummy data.

    Many thanks for looking

Re: Average Calculation in Data Pivot Table Incorrect

Why do you think the "grand total" (overall) average for score 8 should be 75? If I calculate =AVERAGE(Data!L:L), I get 76.5, which should be the correct overall average.

I note that, if I average the averages in the pivot table [=average(Pivot!I6:I10)], then I get 75, but it is usually incorrect statistical analysis to take an average of averages (a quick explanation here: https://coffeebreakdata.com/average-...rage-is-wrong/ ).

As near as I can tell, your pivot table is calculating the grand total overall average correctly. I am not aware of any way to change the behavior of the grand total row, if you believe that an average of averages is correct for your application.

    Hi, MrShorty.

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

Your explanation makes sense and is something I didn't quite understand until I read your link for an explanation.

Thanks for the insight as it all makes sense now.
