Line graph not showing ranking data properly

So I'm trying to create a line graph that shows decrease in rank over years. This chart here is what I'm trying to replicate:

At the moment, I have a table with two columns, one for year and one for rank. I select it and hit the line graph button, but I get two basically flat lines with 500 to 2500 on the Y axis and then 1 to 12 on the X axis. This is despite the fact the years are from 2011 to 2022 and the ranks range from 14th to 80. I only want a single line with points. If you Google search 'Japan English Proficiency', the graph that comes up at the top is exactly what I want to replicate.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Difficult to debug a picture -- especially a picture of the desired output that doesn't show us anything about the data you have in the spreadsheet or how you have created the chart.

What you describe sounds like you have two columns of 12 numbers each. When you create the chart, Excel decides you must want those two columns of numbers charted against a generic 1, 2, 3,... x axis. The y axis extending from 0 to 2500 would be Excel's default "auto" settings for choosing axis limits for data that stretches from 14 to 2022.

The only thing I can suggest based on the description is to create the chart, then bring up the Select Data dialog. In this dialog, you can delete the "years" series from the list of data series. You can also click on the "horizontal axis" values and instruct Excel to use the column of years for the horizontal category axis labels. See if that is enough to get the chart you are looking for.

FWIW, Excel has a slightly odd quirk that you can take advantage of when using data like that, as long as your data source is not a table. Delete the contents of the header cell for the year column, then select the data and insert the chart. It should treat that first column as categories rather than data by default. Once you have the chart, just put the header value back into the cell.
