custom cell shading

Can I use cell shading other than the shades avaiable in Format Cells?

I don't think so. Was about to suggest that you create the desired
visual effect as an image and specify the image as the custom pattern,
but I cannot find any way to specify a file as the source for a cell's
pattern.
