Excel 2007 crashes when chart title is added

Maybe someone else has experienced this problem; I'm working in Excel 2007 and have a worksheet that displays a bar chart of some data that originates from a defined table on another sheet (i.e. chart is defined as a stand-alone object). When I attempt to add a chart title, Excel either crashes or locks up my machine completely. I've tried quite a number of fixes, including running the MS diagnostics utility (which reports no problems of any type found), adding the chart title from the formatting tab, and linking the title to an external cell contents, all to no avail. One weird thing is, the same workbook contains several similar charts that did not experience any problems. Another maybe not-so weirdness; I also loaded this same workbook onto another machine I have on my LAN and it too experienced the same odd crashing behavior. Since both machines have brand-new installs of XP professional under the hood, I don't suspect that OS corruption is responsible for either crash.

It would seem to me that I've uncovered an Excel 2007 bug, but since I cannot reproduce it at will when making similar charts (just this one) I can't be sure. Any ideas would be most gratefully apprecciated.

Found a workaround to chart crashing

This is a reply to my own question, posted for the benefit of any who might follow this link wondering why their Excel 2007 charts are causing crashes. Well, I still don't know WHY, but I found that completing the chart (adding titles) while the chart was still an object in the sheet containing the data, and then later moving the chart to exist as a stand-alone object on its own page avoids the problem. Not really a solution, but I'll take it as a gift from God right now.

I know this is old, but I figured out the solution to this problem.

When you have multiple excel windows open (View > New Window), and you try and add / edit a chart title, the program will crash.

I am experiencing a similar problem totally out of the blue after using 2007 for two years. I don't have the latest service pack loaded and seldom use an additional view of the workbook I am currently using open. Strangely enough after the recovery if appears to become stable.

I was experiencing the same problem. When I closed all but one window, and kept only one window open at a time, the problem was avoided. Agreed, not really a solution, but it's saving my sanity.
