Adding a 'threshold' line to a clustered bar

    Hey everyone,

I'm creating an employee scorecard report for a call center environment, and I'm charting the employee's daily performance against their team's daily performance using a 3-D clustered bar. The y-axis is the date, the x-axis is a time metric, e.g. Average Handle Time. What I want to do is to add a threshold line parallel to the y-axis that marks the target goal. For example, the industry standard for AHT is 300 seconds (5 min.), so I'd like a line which crosses the x-axis at the 5 min. mark. How would I accomplish this?

    Thanks in advance!

    -Brian

The techniques for adding datum lines to charts rely on the ability to use combination charts.
3d charts can not be used in combination charts. So if you want the line, without resorting to using a shape, you will need to chart the chart type.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah, I changed it back to a 2-D chart, but I'm encountering a problem. In addition to the link above, I've also been looking at this:

    http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Charts/...ertSeries.html

I get as far as Paste Special > Values, but when I try to change the chart type, the line disappears entirely, although the series is still somewhere in the chart. I've used several colors and weights to make sure I'm not just overlooking the data, but there's nothing there. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

    Hi,

Did you "Right click on the new series "Today" and select Chart Type from the pop up menu."

Yes. The secondary axes appear, but the series disappears.

    How about this?

"To keep this value up-to date, enter the formula =TODAY into the appropriate cells."

Right now I'm just using the example provided on that website, just to make sure I can actually make this whole thing work. I'm not seeing how that formula affects the series, though.

The x values are also not text. I thought that might be causing a problem, but they're decimals, formatted as Custom > mm:ss. However, for this example, I'm using 0 and 1.

    Hi,

It may be better if you could post your chart here, then may be Andy or me could take a look for you?

Unfortunately I'm off to bed now, but could take a look tomorrow.

To post a zipped example, go to “My Documents” or wherever you have your file stored, right-click and “Send to > Compressed file”, then attach this zipped file to your post.

As suggested post your example. Sounds like the axis scalings are different.

Here is another set of examples on how to add datum lines
