    Stacked Column is adding variables

I am using Excel 2007. The stacked column bar chart is adding the variables instead of producing one as part of the other. For example, two numbers 40 and 280 where 280 should be the top of the vertical (value) axis and 40 a subset of the 280. However, the vertical axis is displaying as 320 instead. I do not have this problem is Excel 2003. Any suggestions to alleviate this problem would be greatly appreciated.

You would only NOT have that problem in xl2003 if the chart was NOT a stack column chart.

A stacked column chart, in any version, will place the 280 on top of the 40 resulting a total height of 320.

What you may have in your xl2003 version is a clustered column chart where the Series Option of Overlay has been set to 100. This will appear to have the 240 column sitting on the 40 with a total height of 240.
The same can be done in xl2007. Change chart type to clustered column and then on the Format Series dialog And set Series Overlap to 100%
    Cheers
