    surface chart

hey guys im using excel 2007. i plot a surface graph with given x and y data sets. is there anyway excel can estimate the values for x and y at given z value? i.e. where the color changes in the graph.

don't know did i describe it well.

thanks in advance. any help will do.

    Re: surface chart

Depending on the data, there may be a whole locus of x,y points that have the same z value. Think isobars on a weather map, or contour lines on a topographic map.

Thx shg. Unfortunately none of the x,y data sets have the same z value with each other. Using countour lines is helpful, could excel export the coordinates or x,y values on the line? I'm sure I can measure it. But the thing is this is for my disseratation, so the measures by hand might not be acceptable. I will ask my supervisor about that. Thanks for your help!

would it help us to understand your problem if you posted example data and chart and described what value(s) you think should be returned for a given z value?
    Cheers

    thx Andy

the points i calculated are the intersect points of the lines.

the values i wanna get are the lines where color changes (that's contour lines right?)

The contour lines are, by definition, points with the same z value.

This can be done, but (for me at least) it's a little complicated. What's the purpose?

While your thinking about, consider whether it can be solved analytically, if z = f(x,y) can be solved in closed form.

    Re: surface chart

I hope it works that way but cant be done. I need to use two programs to get those points in the diagram. unless I can crack the softwares and find out how to calculate it. in that case I should get a degree of programing or something too at graduation.
