    How to label the graph

In the scatter plot I want to annotate the samples with the labels a, b, c, d etc for the following table:
    Label X Y
    a 12.4 51
    b 42.4 77
    c 87.5 92.8
    d 117.4 104.6
    e 132.4 109.8
    f 162.5 122.4
    g 192.3 133.2
    h 222.5 142
    i 252.5 152.2

    Regards,

    Rao

    Hi Rao,

I played around with chart formats and recorded some macros to get the syntax, and this is what I came up with to create your chart as described. The macro expects labels in A1, B1 and C1 (e.g. "Label", "X" and "Y", respectively) and data to start in row 2.

Note: This code works in Excel 2007, maybe not in 2003 or earlier.

I know Andy Pope is a chart master, so maybe he has a quicker method, but this seems to work for me. (I actually borrowed some info from a post of his here: http://www.ozgrid.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94564).

    Hope that helps!

When it comes to using data that is not value, catergory or series name I always use this free addin to link data labels to cells.

Thanks for that link, Andy. I'll play around with it a bit. While it's not something I do every day, I can definitely see uses for it.
