Seemingly Bizarre chart behaviour (characters other than numbers in data)

    Hi,

Can anybody tell me what's happening here?
    excelissue.jpg.jpg

Where is the data that is being used to plot the chart?! is this a bug?

    Thanks in advance,
    Yours slightly perplexed,

    It's a line chart, and the horizontal data are categories (1, 2, 3, ...)

The data appear to be on the page, but it's hard to say from a picture. Perhaps you could upload an example of the actual workbook? I would guess that the "a" in your data (B6) is forcing the xy chart to create an arbitrary interval between your points as it can not compare 4 and a on one axis - but this is a bit of a speculation without an Excel example.

As CC says, it's the "a" in your x values that is causing the xy-scatter to default to an x axis which is 1 to n. Where n is the number of points.
