    custom marker

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows how to create a chart that looks like this image. specially varying the marker color/type with a value in column. for example. depending upon the "fuel type" varying the marker , as shown in the attached image.

Cumulative Capacity (MW) Variable Operating Cost ($/MWh) Fuel Type
    735.50 1.47 Wind
    976.50 1.77 Wind
    1,107.00 1.77 Wind
    1,385.00 1.82 Coal
    1,617.50 1.85 Wind

You can use multiple series to get different markers for fuel types.

If you want the legend to have rectangles rather than the diamond marker then you would need to add more dummy series. The markers would be plotted but removed from the legend. Where as the legend markers would be provided by series plotted as Column or area charts. No actual data is required for these series.

    Hi Sanjee,

I don't see any custom markers in the chart, just plain bog standard what Excel has.

In order to achieve the different colors for the markers, you may need to plot them as different serieries and carefully lay out your data, for example like this:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
then chart the whole table with the first column as the X axis categories. Each of the remaining columns will be a separate series and you can format the markers for each series.

    thanks Andy and Teylyn,
would it be possible to use the "blue red yellow green" as the X-axis instead of Y-axis as that is the "industry" way to do this. may be I am just looking to do that is impossible without macros.

Not sure I follow your question.

Basically each colour gets it's own series. Each series can have it's own x and y values.

    Re: custom marker

I am also trying to customize chart markers conditional on other values in the underlying data table.

This "separate series" solution is workable, but labor intensive.

I thought it might be doable with a macro, setting the color property of each marker conditional on other values, but I don't know Excel 2003 VBA well enough to figure it out.

Anyone out there know how to do that?
