Adding an XY Scatter to an Area Chart

    Good Afternoon All

I have previously posted a question to find out if it is possible to set up a column chart with different width columns. Andy Pope very kindly sent me a link which answered my question and showed a way of doing it as a workaround with an area chart

    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...umn-chart.html

I now have another question, is it possible to add a scatter to an area chart? I have managed to add a scatter in order to place labels on the chart but when I try and add the data in cells A34:B140 as a scatter it only seems to show some of the values up to around 100 on the chart.

I have attached an example of where I have got to.

If anyone could point me in the right direction with this I would be very grateful.

    Thanks in advance

    Jim

Jimmy, I'm looking at your chart and your explanation above, trying to figure out what you want to to and failing miserably. What "labels" do you want to place in the chart? Your XY series has only numbers.

Can you simplify your example and step back a bit to explain what the expected result should be?

You can super-impose an XY scatter chart on the existing area chart and use the XY Chart Labeler Addin to place labels at specific points in the chart, but I don't quite see where this applies in your chart.

    cheers

Re: Adding an XY Scatter to an Area Chart

    Hi Teylyn

Thanks very much for your reply, I realise now that the labels made this very misleading. I actually did have other text values for the labels but changed them to numbers because the real values I wanted may have revealed confidential data to some people looking at it.

After a full day of playing around with this I have actually managed to get what I need but without the labels.

As per the forum rules I have attached the solution I have come up with and also to show you what it was I was talking about!!

Instead of using an XY scatter to get the scatter chart I used a line chart. The reason for this is because a line chart can be formulated as a date in the same way the Area Chart needs to be to get the desired effect (see original link form Andy).

Thanks again for your response Teylyn

    Cheers

    Jim

I'd be bragging if I said I understand what you want or what you did. I don't see any labels in the chart you attached. But if you're happy with the outcome, so be it.
