Hi, I had a similar problem when trying to add a few more columns to my pivot table data source. Excel would crash when assigning the new source.
    I found this method works:
    - In the data source, add your columns.
    - in the file with the pivot table(s), add a new tab and insert a brand new pivot table with the now bigger data source.
    - then go back to one of the older pivot tables and change the data source again - voila, this time it will not crash on you.

Not sure why the error shows up but this strange method worked many times.

    Hi everyone,
    I am new here.
I've got exact same problem, tried the method, it works fine but all my calculated field in pivot table gone as well.
Anyone know how to "not crash and save the calculated field"
or maybe easier way to make back the calculated field
