Change display units for y-axis (excel 2000)

Is there a way to change the number format on the y-axis of a chart? I am using excel 2000.

I have a table with data in the 100s of thousands and can't change the structure of the table.

For example, I want to display 600,000 as 600 (and notate that numbers are in the thousands)

Figured it out. I selected the cells to be formatted, then choose Format, Cells. Click the Number tab. Select Custom from the Category list, and in the Type box enter 0, (that's a zero followed by a comma).
