Re-order Appearance of Series in Legend

    Hello Forum,

In Excel 03 it was possible to re-order the legend - I cannot find how to do this in Excel 2007!

Attached is a chart with 2 bar series and 2 lines. I've named the series in the order I want them to appear in the legend how do I achieve this?

    Hello,

In a mixed chart like this, you cannot even re-order the legend items in Excel 2003, other than the order of the two lines. If the chart is all one chart type, then, yes. But with a mixed chart like this, no.

In Excel 2003 and in later versions, you can only change the order of the line chart legend items in your sample chart. Right click the chart, select "Select Data" and change the order of series One and Three with the Up and Down arrows. This will affect their placement in the legend, but the two line chart legend items will always show up next to each other. You cannot sort them as One - Two - Three - Four and this is not possible with Excel 2003 either, as far as I'm aware.

    cheers, teylyn

Teylyn, thank you so much for your quick reply. You could well be right about it not being possible across bars and lines in previous versions of Excel - I know that I did move lines around as I pleased, but am not sure about mixed charts.

    Two questions:

    1. I had already tried via the Chart Data screen, and have tried again, but I can't make the legend change for the two bar charts - I tried to swap the lines as well without success. Did it work for you?

    2. The lines are the important ones - is it possible to get these to the front. This chart started as a line chart so I would think that would take precedence? If I started with the bars and added the lines, would that help?

    Thank you in anticipation!
