Excel 2010 - Cannot add colors to a charts data table

Is there a way to fill in a data table w/ colors? It appears to be pretty static and not flexible. I would like to be able to add backgound colors to the cells so that ones eyes can gravitate to the data. Please review the attachment for clarity.

    Thanks

As you have discovered the formatting is very limited.

Better to use cells to build your own table.

Andy, thanks for the response. This is what I was afraid of, but thought I would give a shot to see if there is a work around. Since my group at work is involved in the Microsoft Technology Adoption Program (TAP), we might suggest.
