Average Line

Dear All

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I have a simple vertical bar graphic with a range of numerical values on the Y axis and a list of samples on the X axis. For each sample there is a correspondent value on the Y axis. I want to show how many samples are above/below the average numerical value on the Y axis and would like to draw a red line parallel to the X axis that would mark the average value on the Y axis. Does it make sense ?

best wishes, Pedro

Re: Average Line

if you could supply a sample, it would make it much easier to offer some suggestions or help
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Question Re: Average Line

Hello Pedro
FDibbins is correct, a file of sample data would help. But in the meantime, take a look at the attached example. Is this the kind of chart you're looking for?

Re: Average Line

I've never quite seen the average line done in this manner, but its learning something new everyday.

Here is what I would do...

With your test data:
First, remove the text from cell A1 (this will only mess up the charting, but you can add it back in after the chart has been created.
In C1, add Average and in C2 and dragged down to C13 >> =AVERAGE($B$2:$B$13)
Highlight A1:C13
Insert >> Column >> 2-D Clustered Column
Right click on the average series >> Change series Chart Type >> Line

Here are some good resources:

Lightbulb Re: Average Line

Hello
Glad it was what you wanted. Well, you're spoiled for choice, Jeffrey has given you a number of options to explore and I've attached a copy of your file, with a chart and instructions explaining the way that I went about solving the question. I hope the instructions make sense but I'm sure you'll find a way to make one of the solutions offered work. Mine may not be the most efficient, so try them out and see what works best.

Regards
