Chart data points so their color represents a trend in a data series

I would like to chart a time-series on a scatter chart so that the color of each point is a function of the trend of the data (essentially the derivative). For example, say the data is temperature, if the temperature difference between a point and the previous is a high positive value (increasing fast), then I want that point on the chart to be a warmer color in the red region, if the temperature is decreasing, I want it to be closer to the blue region. On a normal plot of temperature versus time the trend is obvious; however, ultimately I want to do scatter plots of one set of temperature data compared to another where the trend would not be obvious without some type of color encoding.

I have Microsoft Office Standard 2010.

    Thanks.
