i have some comment boxes on a chart, above the time it happened.
the problem is that I'm updating this chart every day and add more days.
the updates move the chart and the boxes are in the wrong place.
is there a way to staple them to a specific date?

Add another series with only the data points that have comments having a value.
tried and i didn't see anything in the chart.
also, after doing that, how do i actually connect the comment boxes to those dates?

took me some time to reproduce on my excel (there are some steps to get this done your way) but its working great.

In xl2013 you could have added data labels whose text way based on a range of cells. One issue would have been that the area chart does not offer position setting for data labels/callouts.
To get around that you could have repeated the information as another data series plotted as a line. The add datalabels/callouts to that series and positioned them Above.
