    Charting a likert scale

    Hi,

I want to create a chart similar to the one in this thread:

    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-char...g-a-chart.html

I have seen the instructions for recreating this, but I'm still unsure of the why rather than the how. I know that's not specifically an Excel question, but I would really really appreciate a greater understanding of this particular chart.

    Cheers!

Why would you want to created it if you do not understand the 'why' of it?

The chart is simply centered around the mid point of the Neutral score. In order to do this you need to split the neutral score in to a +/- half and make the negative/very negative scores negative.

    Hi,

Sorry, I guess I didn't express myself very well. I know why I want to create the graph and what it represents. What I wanted to make sure of was why the particular calculations were used to do it.

    Thanks for answering.

    Cheers

the calculations are, as I said, to position the segments of each bar around the center of the midpoint of the neutral score.

I am really struggling with this type of chart too. Andy popes example has really helped...but what does 'Pad' stand for in the example??

It positions the neutral series in the correct position so the labelling of Neutral is the correct value rather than half positive and half negative.

Simply delete the contents of the Pad cells to see the Neutral data labels shift left.

Hello Marydavies, and welcome to the forum.
