select a range (season) of daily values in a long daily calendar

    Good morning
I tried to read find my problem but i did not find

    i have a 30 years daily measurement

    COLUMN A COLUMN B
    01-01-2000 value1
    02-01-2000 value2
    ... ...
    ... ...
    31-12-2030 value10958

and i would like to select (extract) seasons

so i would like to obtain 4 selection (new columns) for all values in winter (month 12, 1 and 2), spring (month 3,4,5), summer (month 6,7,8) or autumn (month 9 10 11)

how can i say "filter values that contains -01-02-(january february)" without doing confusion with days 01-02....

    thank you for the help!

    best regards
    lobo

You could add a "helper" column and extract the month from each entry. Then sort on the data on the months

Newer versions of Excel allow more advanced filtering options than Excel 2003. Excel 2003 filtering is much more limited without adding a "helper" column mentioned above
Click on star (*) below if this helps

    ehy km
    thanks for your quick reply
I actually installed this week office 2010 and i am going to update my profile immediately..thank for noticing that
with excel 2010 i managed to use this custom filter by selecting for example december january and february of every year..but is time consuming because one has to open the list of every year (i have 30 years) and moreover the pivot and the filter does not visualize more then 10.000 data and i have just a bit more..so after this job also some data are missing...moreover i have hundreds of spreadsheet and this filter does not work with a multiple selection of spreadsheet

    thank you for the help

    Just a suggestion:

How about having of multiple worksheets, one for each month, one for each year and a "Master" worksheet? The "Master" worksheet would have links to all of the individual monthly worksheets. As the data changes in a particular month, that data is reflected in the "Yearly" worksheet and the "Master" worksheet.

If you needed to look at all of the data, you could by looking at the "Master" worksheet. If you needed to look at a particular year, you could go to the worksheet for that year only.

That way if you only needed January 2012 you examine the monthly worksheet for that month or if you needed the year 2012, you would look at that year.

It would take longer to initially set this up, but the data would be more useable

    Hey Kirk
    thank you for the answer
I think i got what you mean but i have already an incredible amount of spreadsheets and different files..
moreover i will use all the (for example)summer data..with other spring data from others 10 files (outputs of models) to aggregate them in 1 cumulative density function

so I am new to this advanced filter in 2010 and it seems pretty powerful
What i think i need is just a string to name my cell
like to create a new column with the name of the summer and then use the advance filter (by selecting summer as criteria)

so i need something that from
    30-05-2000 call it spring
    01-06-2000 call it summer

the column A containing the dates are in TEXT file

    thanks

    Best whishes

Without looking at your data, I can't help further. Good Luck
