    Create bell curve

    Hi all

I'm looking to create a seasonality curve in Excel. I've had a hunt through the website but can't find a corresponding thread. Essentially, I want to provide the start point and then have it spit out a bell curve over 52 weeks. I've attached a file showing what I'd like it to do, but need help getting the curve right.

    Cheers.

I'm not entirely sure what you are looking for. Most bell curves are described using the mean (not median) and standard deviation.

It looks like you are wanting a "bell" shaped curve that starts 1000 (at x=0 weeks), increases to 1050 at x=26 weeks, then returns to 1000 at x=52 weeks.

One way to get a curve like that is to use those three points and "regress" a 2nd order polynomial.

If you feel you want something based on a gaussian "bell" curve, you should be able to use some variation on the NORMDIST() function. Maybe something like y=A*NORMDIST(x,26,s,false)+1000 where x is the week number, s is the standard deviation (chosen to give the desired "shape" [sharp or broad] to the curve) and A is a fudge factor chosen to give the right value at x=26.

Either of those approaches is purely empirical. If we better understood what you were doing with this curve, there might be a more correct way to draw the kind of curve you want.

    Hi MrShorty

I'm essentially attempting to build a seasonality curve for a number of wine products I forecast. The seasonality will help in creating the correct 'curve' for red and white wine, which tend to sell higher at specific points of the year.

What you've shown above is helpful though; I need the basic bell curve first before I can do anything else as the curve provides the basis for my forecast.

A seasonal curve is unrelated to a bell curve -- it's a measure of variations in product sales (or whatever) over the course of a year, usually by month. To get such a curve, you need sales over a period of years -- desirably, several years. You can then forecast from that.

I can't relate your example to that.
