I want to reference an external workbook's data for the source of my PivotTable

In case anyone doubts my need to do this, I'm going to explain my overall problem and why the data needs to be in an external workbook: Whenever I use MS Query to import data from my database, it truncates notes fields to 256 characters. The only way I know to keep the comment fields from truncating is to export the Access data to Excel using the builtd-in Access button that exports to Excel, with "keep formatting" checked. I can do this in a macro within Access, so producing the spreadsheet whenever I need to is actually fairly easy. The only problem is the spreadsheet is written over every time it updates, so I have to obviously keep my pivottables in a separate workbook.

I can't seem to figure out how to link to this spreadsheet in a PivotTable from a separate workbook. Is this possible?

    Thanks.

Well it looks like I have figured out an alternative solution. When I import as "XML Data Import" from the external spreadsheet, it does not truncate. Still might be interesting to know if the above is possible. Thanks.
