    Pivot Chart bug

    Hi,

I am experiencing a bug and wonder if anyone else have encountered something like this or have any suggestions on how to fix it.

I have an excel file with several pivot charts(about 20) and pivot tables(about 50) and I am using slicers. The pivot tables and charts all read from the same data sheet which has about 1000 rows and 60 columns. Lately, I have been experiencing that some of the Pivot charts break down and seem to be reading from a different pivot table. Either way, something that used to be a nice graph is now just filled up with words. This may happen when I am altering other pivot tables or updating them, however I am not sure this is the cause of it as I am always working with pivots in this model. To answer the obvious question, the graph that breaks down is not in anyway related to the changes I am doing.

To me this is not a big issues as I can quickly re-do the graph (it is just annoying), however if I give to someone else they might not know what to do if this happens.

Unfortunately, I can not share my model as it would take ages to sanitize it.

Any hints or tips will be greatly appreciated!

    Re: Pivot Chart bug

I'm having the same issue, I think. If I have multiple pivots and pivot charts I have (and it seems like only one) chart that changes data source to a different pivot. It's really strange how the data source changes when you can't manually do it.

It will happen in a few different ways - 1. If I filter a certain way (haven't figured out why) and 2. If I load a saved chart template to change the chart formating.

Anybody have this happen? or have a work around?

I have the exact same issue and have not seen anyone address this. I build dashboards for a large retailer using excel pivot tables, pivot charts, and slicers. Occasionally when using these slicers the graph breaks and will change the data reference to a different pivot table. This always happens when removing the filter, not on application of the filter. It also happens if you try and copy and paste the format of one chart to another. I could actually look at the pivot table reference, hover over the paste format button (where you preview the new chart) and watch as the chart would break and reference another pivot table. Note: No where did I even have to click the formatting. This is incredibly annoying and an obvious microsoft error.

    Re: Pivot Chart bug

So, I think I've discovered a work around. The naming of the pivottables has something to do with it. If you go in and put custom names for your pivottables it seems to fix the issue. I was noticing especially if I had a "pivottable1" it was likely that the pivotchart connected to "pivottable10" would revert to "pivottable1". As soon as I named them custom names it has fixed the issue.

    Good luck

    Re: Pivot Chart bug

Not sure what the original poster was after, but there is another issue when you drop the "grand totals" from rows and columns in your pivot table. Then on your slicer you click on an attribute without any data, the pivotchart then reformats to its original formatting. If you add back the grandtotals to rows and columns then the slicers won't break your pivotchart.

A few people at my company have experienced the same problem. Thanks for posting the workaround, but is Microsoft fixing these bugs? We've spent hours redoing our pivot charts.

    Re: Pivot Chart bug

Oh, and there is one other issue that may be closely related. Pivot tables automatically get assigned a name (eg. Pivot_table01) when you create one. I have noticed that when I have 10 pivot tables with pivot charts on them, the 10th pivot chart will reassign itself to pivot_table01 when using a slicer or filter. Renaming the pivot tables seems to get around this issue so the charts stay linked to the right pivot table..
