Changing the label on the Horizontal Axis

I am unable to change the x-axis labels on a scatter plot in Excel 2010. I have month-wise precipitation data (jan feb mar.... on the x axis vs. depth of rain on the y axis) and am trying to get the labels on the x-axis to be jan feb mar. But excel inserts a default 1 2 3... label and will not even let me change it in the 'Select Data' > Horizontal Axis Labels field. I have tried the 'Layout' > Horizontal Axis Options as well with no luck. If I change the chart type to a column or even line plot, the labels work but for a scatter plot, looks like the default numbering pattern that excel inserts is the only option. Any help you can provide will be appreciated.
    Thanks

If your xvalues are dates and the xy-scatter is displaying 1,2,3 etc. This usually occurs when there is a non date value in the data set.

I don't have dates, just the names of months such as January, February, March...I'm looking at monthly totals so the X axis should have each of the 12 months' names instead of 1,2,3..12.

Month names are not dates or true values. Use a line chart instead.
