How to make groups of colored bars in bar graph?

This may be a simple thing but I can't figure it out (Mac, Excel 2011). I have some numerical data - 10 numbers. I need to make a simple bar graph, such that the first three numbers are grouped together (red bars next to each other), the next two are a next group in blue, the next 3 are another group in green, etc. Somehow, when I add these groups to the Chart Data, it always spreads them out among the groups instead of grouping them together the way I want. What am I missing?

    thanks in advance

I have attached a sample file.

Right click on bar chart then go to Source Data.

There you can arrange your data as per your requirement.

    To get what dailyglobal did:

Selec all data (including A column with group names).
    Insert -> Clustered Column

thanks, but this is what I've been getting as well. What I need (sorry, I didn't explain clearly enough in my email) is that the values in group A were all together, in the same color, where your graph has the "1", group B values were all together in a different color where your graph has the "2" bars, and group C's values were all together in a different color over the "3" bars. Right now, group A's values are spread over the 3 clusters instead of being together. Does that make sense?

    thanks again,

    Mike

If you plot bycolumns instead of rows you will get A's score together.
But you will still need to format the colours of the individual columns.

How will the reader know what each of the columns in group A refer to?

    aha - that works.

no automatic way to do it?

    > How will the reader know what each of the columns in group A refer to?[/QUOTE]

the title of each group will say; the bars in each group are results of repeats of exactly the same experiment, so it will be "experiment type A", "experiment type B", etc.

    thanks!

Depending on the data layout, you don't need to color individual columns. See attached. This is a column chart with overlap set to 100% and a very low gap width.

    Glad this has helped.

At the top of each comment there's a gray bar with the date of the post on the left. Towards the right hand side of that bar, there's the post number and several icons. One of those icons looks like an old-fashioned balance scale, but it's a bit hard to make out in this forum's colour scheme. That's what you can click to add to a member's reputation, but I'm happy enough to learn that my suggestion was useful.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    cheers,

I don't mean to be stupid, but it's not working. I click on the balance scale thing and it says "This post has not received any reputation. You currently have 10 reputation point(s)." and there's a button "OK". I click the OK but nothing else happens - how do I tell it I want to give some of my available points?!? Seems like this should be easier....

    thanks

Hi, I'd like to look at the attachments referenced above but cannot see them, even after registering and logging in. Am I doing something wrong?

Hello mpavey, and welcome to the forum.

This forum has had a software upgrade last week and the links to attachments for older posts are currently broken. The forum owner is looking into this.

    Thanks for your patience.

Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks a bunch!
I'm struggling to insert error bars for different sets of columns though.
Off to search for how to do that!

    cheers,
This file was great! thank you!
However, I do have a question. Is there a way to do this with the data being listed vertically?
For instance, we have a tool that runs and gives us alot of data but it comes out vertically. I only did the top 25 but if I did all of the apps it could take hours. For instance I would have 3 columns and many, many rows:
The file that gets generated looks like this
    Application Service Team Network Bandwidth
    Word Client Team 10
    Helpdesk App Client Team 875
    Youtube Network team 900
    Network Monitor Network team 900
    Mail Mail Team 756

We could group them 1 of 2 ways:
    1. We could group the apps by the highest to lowest in terms of network bandwidth
    2. We could want to group them team and then by app then utilization

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!
