How to summarize daily schedule by value and category?

Hello, I hope someone can help me with this, I've searched through this forum and others but can't find anything that works. What I'm trying to do is count the number of entries for a given month for each project with non-exact matches (so that Project A office, field, lab, etc get rolled up into Project A). The closest thing I could come up with was a formula something like this... =countifs(B2:M2,>=B2,B2:M2,<C2,B4:M9,"*"&A5&"*") (where B2:M2 are dates at the top of the data set, B4:M9 is the data set, B2 is month 1, C2 is month 2, and A5 is the Project name) but it doesn't work...and I think I would rather have the flexibility of the pivot table if that's possible.

Is summarizing the info in this way a possibility? Let me know if you need more explanation of what I'm looking for.

Not sure how you would do this with Pivot tables but if you want to go the formula route, if I've understood you correctly, then try the following. For the count of Project references, copied across and down cells E13:G16:
