Putting dotted vertical lines to separate sections of a column graph

    Hi,

I have made a column graph to show frequency (y-axis) within different ranges (x-axis). I want to put dotted vertical lines to separate the graph into 3 sections corresponding to my 3 treatment times for illustration purposes. Is there a way to do that in excel?

    Thanks

Manually draw the lines you want onto your chart.

Insert-Shapes . . . choose the solid line. ACTIVATE YOUR CHART (click on it) BEFORE DRAWING YOUR LINES ON IT. Draw your one line where you want it. (Hold down the shift key while drawing your line to get your line perfectly vertical.) Right-click on the line - Format shape-Line color to select the color of the line and to make it a dashed line.

Duplicate your line instead (click on it, CTRL-D) of redrawing it and you can make sure all of your drawn lines are exactly the same length.

Depending on your chart and data it may be possible to use gridlines.
Otherwise addition data series can be used.

If you need more help post example file with explanation of where the dividing lines should appear.

Re: Putting dotted vertical lines to separate sections of a column graph

Andy, I've tried using grid lines. I can make them appear to be part of a chart by removing the fill from the plot and chart formats and altering the height and width of the columns and rows, but I can't actually make them part of the chart - they're just in the background. How do I get them to become part of the chart? Also, what kind of data series can I add that will appear as a dotted lines? Thanks! Bill

I think you are confusing chart gridlines with worksheet gridlines.

Line series or xy-scatter even column charts is suitable. Really hard to say without seeing the chart.
