Difficulty creating a basic line chart without breaks in line plots

I'm having a difficult time creating a basic line chart for some reason. This seems beyond simple but I'm just not figuring it out for some reason. I wonder if someone would mind looking at my data and either explaining what I need to do or create the chart for me so I can reverse engineer it on my live data?

I have several item numbers that have been tested intermitantly over the course of the last year and given a rating of 1-10. I want the Y-axis to represent the 1-10 score and the x-axis to represent the months over the last year (Feb 2012 - April2013). Each Item number should be represented by it's own colored line and ploted with a continuous line throughout the chart.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer,

    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

What happens when a given item number has more than one 'score' in a month?

    Hi Spencer,

    Thanks for replying.

I may be wrong, but my thinking was that the x axis and the y axis would work in a similar way. For the y axis for example, I'll have bench marks, probably 6-10. The values however will usually not be whole numbers. The graph knows to calculate 7.34 somewhere between 7 and 8.

I'm hoping that the same would work for the x axis. The markers won't be 6-10 however, instead they will be the months of the year. The exact date determines where in the month column to plot the point. A test done on the April 5th will be closer the left side of the April marker than one from April 27th for example.

    Does that make sense?

    Thanks

I think this is what you mean...

To make things easier/possible I've tabulated your data slightly differently.
I've done this with a 'helper column' but there are other (slightly more complicated) ways of doing this.

The graph is then pretty straight forward from there.

Let me know if I'm completely off the mark of what you need, or if you need any of this explaining further.

Spencer, that looks pretty great, thank you very much

Do you know if there is a way to turn lines on and off?

The below link will show you how to do that. You will have adapt it slightly to meet your data.
