Make a graph of timeserisdata with different time-intervals (year/month)

    Hi.

I want to make a graph of some timeseriesdata. The problem is the data is in different timeintervalls - part of the series is data for every year, some is every quarter of a year and some is every month. Now if i just make a graph of this excel thinks it is as long intervall between the months as the years and hence the graph becomes quite skewed. How can i make it be representative of the data?

My first thought is to make an new coloumn where the time-series is in only yearly data. But this would be crazy much work by hand. It just can't be the easiset way.. so any other ideas would be appricieated!

    Hello,

I believe that I have the same problem. I want my graph to look like this formato desejado.jpg , but I have no idea how to do it.

    Thanks in advance.

    @hpdm, format axis as text

@droppe, post workbook example (if above suggestion does not work)

Re: Make a graph of timeserisdata with different time-intervals (year/month)

Thanks for replying! Actually, i think maybe my problem is the opposite of hpdm's. I want to make the intervalls in the graph to be equal in time so that the distance betwwen may and april is a twelfth of the distance between 2010 and 2011. One problem is my x axis data is organised as text (quarters of years and months).

I attached a snaphot of the data i'm working with.

Someone suggested i just need to make the whole timeseries monthly (adding 11 new rows each year that is only a year, and so on), then it's easy to make a non-skewed graph from it. I suppose it would work. But. It just can't possibly be the smartest way to do all that work by hand?

And what if i want to add another timeseries from the same source, configured in the same way (for instance, maybe i realise i want to compare the amount of debt to banks by both housholds and companies).

I imagine something that tells the graph the distance between the data points in the x-axis changes at two times in the series. Or some way to make a macro that makes the right amount of new rows in the right places, so that i don't have to do it by hand - it's a long series...

In order to plot time series you need actual dates.

See difference between plots for a few of the data points.

Oh, i didn't know you could do that. Smart!

But the easiest way to do make the series into dats can't possible be to re-write every entry so it matches excels imagination of what a date is? Or? Hmm.

unless you have a valid date how would you expect excel to treat random text?

I think i figured it out! (just to write first date and fill series....) YAY!

No, i just wondered about the smartest way to get alot of 'random text' into the format of date that excel understands.

I'm really not used to excel but i know it's not so stupid as it feels when i don't know how it works...

How can that work, unless you real data is very different from example?

not sure what you think i thought was working :P.

But i wrote the first date and made a 'fill series' and chose year, then made some by hand anyhow b/c could chose quarter, then chose 'fill months'. Why shouldn't that work? Haven't found where to change the graph to show x-axis as timeseriesdata yet but looking.

If you processes blocks of your data then I see how that is working.
I had wrongly assumed you entered the first date and them fill down ALL data items.

Select axis and display format dialog.
Axis as Time series, rather than automatic.
