Trying to match columns for use in pivot table

I have a spreadsheet that has similar information in two separate columns, I need to get the data into one row so that I can utilize it in a pivot table.
    See attached sample

Do you mean "I have a spreadsheet that has similar information in two separate ROWS"?
If so... could you not right click on cell C3, select "Insert" and select "shift cells down"?
Then sort the list by column B, delete the blank rows, and resort by column A.
Please click the * icon below if I have helped.

Looking at your example it looks like you just need to do a V look-up to get all of the information for each item number in the same row. Below is how I did it. (I attached the completed spreadsheet)

1.) sorted it by 2012 Umits column
2.) created a new spreadsheet with just the 2012 Umits column
a,) Sort this sheet by Item Number
b.) I created a Name Range for these columns (highlight the column, click insert, name)
3.) In the "original sheet" I deleted the rows that just had 2012 Umits
4.) created a v-lookup formula in the "original sheet" that takes the 2012 Umits and places it in the original spreadsheet in the column you want it in. (I used the Name Range I created in Step 2)

This should do it, let me know if it helped.
