    Pivot not Grouping by Month

I am trying to create a table to show me my monthly sumary. On my table I can filter by month, but when I created the Pivot table, I can only select ALL or each individual day. I want to be able to summarize by month. Can you please help?

My issue is in the Expense sheet of my workbook.

Add the dates as a row field rather than a page field.
If posting code please use code tags, see here.

    It works for me.

    What exactly did you try?

Did you group the dates by month?

Re: Pivot not Grouping by Month

I selected the pivot table, went to the PivotTables Tools tab and on the Options sub-tab I selected Field List.

Then in the PivotTable Field List window I grabbed Date from Report Filter to Row Labels.

Next I selected the first date in the pivot table, right clicked and selected Group...

In the Grouping dialog Months was selected by default so I just pressed OK.

That grouped the dates by month and changed the filter dropdown to show months rather than individual dates.

Sweet, got it...last question. How can I get the Pivot to grab that data from my table as it grows?

Since the data source is a table all you need to do is refresh the pivot table to update it with any new data.

To refresh select the pivot table and either right click and select Refresh or goto the Options sub-bar and click Refresh.

By the way, you might want to move the pivot table if the table is going to expand.

I have had this problem many many times

following these instructions, when I hit the group button, it does not bring up the window to select by month/day/year or it tells me the selection cannot be grouped.

    Please help

You really should start a new thread.

Anyway, it sounds like you might not have 'real' dates.

Try this formula, replace A1 with the refernce of one of the cells with a 'date'.

    =ISNUMBER(A1)

If it returns TRUE you have 'real' dates, FALSE you have 'text' dates.

The dates that I have are "True" so they are real dates

Can you upload an example workbook?

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.
