Using a saved Chart template

I have created a chart template that I would like to reuse. Whenever I apply it, it changes the data source to the source that was used when the template was created. I thought the template was just supposed to apply the format and not the data. I'm not sure if I am applying it wrong or created it wrong. Can anyone help?
