Four quadrant scatter chart with defined X & Y axis based on averages

Trying to create a chart from a series of data. I would like both the X axis and the Y axis to = the average of the data. So I would have 4 quadrants, with the upper left would be the data where Y was above average, but X was below average, the upper right quad would be both X & Y above average, lower left quad both below average, and lower right Y below and X above average. Using Excel 2007. Any help greatly appreciated!

I doubt you will find an automatic, built in way to do this. It should be fairly straight forward to do it manually.

    1) If you don't already have it, calculate the average x and average y values in the spreadsheet somewhere.
    2) In the format dialog for each axis (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...163.aspx?CTT=1), enter the average of the other variable as the "axis crosses at" parameter.
    3) add any other formatting you want to include.

If you are familiar with VBA, you could automate this process.

For some reason I can't figure out - my X axis is defaulting to a scale of 1 - 20, with increments at 5...

Ok - I finally got the chart axis' to display how I want, but I can't get column B to correspond. Everything is "Series1" - but all the data points need to be tied to column B. Any help?

Admittedly my viewer does not reliably view the newer file formats, but it looks like the graph corresponds correctly to column B on the x axis and column C on the y axis. Can you more specifically explain how they are not corresponding?

If you want different names you either need to create multiple series or use this free addin to link data labels to cells.

Thanks Andy... it appears the add-in app may be the way to go. But this was just a sample sheet. My actual spreadsheet will have anywhere from 50 to 120 rows of data (different data points), so I have to ask, when you say "create multiple series" - is there an easy way to do that on this sheet? Could you explain further? Thanks!

You will need to use Select Data dialog or code to add series for xy value in order to use built-in data label information.

Yepp - that app was definitely easier, haha! Thanks again!
