Creat a line chart of monthly sales

I would like to make a chart with Monthly sales... but i cant seem to figure it out...
i have a list of daily sales, and i want to make a line chart of the running total...

On your data table target input a new column. Call it month. In the field type =Month(DATECELL) and you now have sales grouped by month. Now use Month as your row and sales as your metric. voila. As you paste on new days to your data table it will automagically be summed into the current month (running tally).

i dont really understand... can you show me an example... i am not too good at this, and i dont know what you mean as to data table target...

The sales data you are trying to plot is going to be plotting is captured in a month / day / year format inside your dataset. If you turn your data into a table (Insert table button over your data) the range will automatically update as you put new information in. You can then add a column onto your original dataset calling it month. Put in your column header and then go down a row. On the row below it type =month(XXXXX) with XXXX being the cell on the same row with your date in it. This will populate a new column that extracts the month from your date field. You then pivot create a pivot table based off of the dataset. On the row box (bottom left) drop your month. In the values box (bottom right) drop your sales. IT will sum all sales by the month key. Create a chart based off of that pivot table and it will automatically update as you append new daily data to the bottom of your original dataset.

OK, got it so far, but how do i "pivot creat a pivot table based off of the dataset"?

highlight your datarange and then go to insert - pivot table

i want something to look like the attached... So i can have a chart that i can see when we reach target sales just by inputting my daily sales...

Thanks, another thing... is there any way to make it so the chart only calculates to today...?
Currently it makes a line across the chart at whatever $ amount it is at...
