    charts not displaying properly

    Hello,

i am currently running excel 2010 and trying to insert a pie chart using data i have acquired through a questionnaire.

when i select the question along with the data and click insert>pie chart the chart inserts and shows the question along with the answers but the actual pie chart its self is blank/not visible

    any ideas?

    Thank you,

    David

    Hello,

the data source for a pie chart should consist of a two-column table, with the first column containing the text labels and the second column containing the numeric values (at least, that is the most common layout for a pie chart data source).

Keep in mind that a chart needs numbers to plot, in whatever chart type you want to show. If the source data does not contain numbers, there will be no chart values.

You may want to post a sample file with about 5 to 10 of your questionnaire questions and answers and the chart you want to plot from that. Make sure that your sample file only contains dummy text, no real names or confidential data.

    cheers,

    Re: charts not displaying properly

So, take a look at your source data. Keep in mind that an Excel chart needs numbers to plot values in a chart. Which of your cells contain numbers?

It's not easy to tell from a screenshot what the data values in a speadsheet are. I asked you to post a sample spreadsheet. An image is basically useless, since I cannot tell from an image what the actual value of a cell is.

Can you try and post the file that you used to take the screenshot?

    cheers,

    Re: charts not displaying properly

The data in your sample file does not have any numerical values, only text. Excel cannot create a chart from text. A value like

    5 (31%) 0 to 2 years
is not something that Excel can chart. You will need to change the data source to show only the absolute value, in this case "5". You can calculate the percentage in another column, if required, but if you use pie charts (which is not a good idea, but let's not go there just now), the pie chart can also display the percentage in the data label automatically.

So, change all the values that look like

    5 (31%)

    to values that look like

    5

and then you can build charts with the data.

    cheers, teylyn

    Re: charts not displaying properly

thank you, this makes a bit more sense now.
i have also noted that the data needs to be on the right hand side and the answers/responses on the left.
is this correct? if it is, i will have to swap the layout around.
