    Unsure if PivotTable is the correct feature

    I'm trying to reorganize the masterlist of all of my supplies so that they show up dynamically under the categories they belong to.

    So that instead of having:

    CAT1 SUBCAT1 ITEM1
    CAT1 SUBCAT1 ITEM2
    CAT1 SUBCAT2 ITEM1
    CAT2 SUBCAT1 ITEM1
    CAT2 SUBCAT2 ITEM1

    I have

    CAT1 SUBCAT1 Item1
    Item2
    CAT1 SUBCAT2 Item1
    etc.

    For the most part PivotTables seem to accurately perform that task, but I don't seem to be utilizing either the column or data fields. This made me think that perhaps it would be better to perform this task with another feature, or that I wasn't fully utilizing the PivotTable abilities. I intend on adding in the QTY of each individual item; however, it seems that doing so creates an undesired column effect.

    Your post does not comply with Rule 1 of our Forum RULES. Your post title should accurately and concisely describe your problem, not your anticipated solution.

Poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice will be addressed according to the OP's experience in the forum: If you have less than 10 posts, expect (and respond to) a request to change your thread title. If you have 10 or more posts, expect your post to be locked, so you can start a new thread with an appropriate title.

    Re: Am I using the correct feature?

    I changed the title, but I honestly don't know what's wrong with the title or how to make it better fit Rule 1. In my opinion it appears to fit, the problem I have is I'm unsure if I'm using the correct feature of Excel by using PivotTable, or if I'm not using PivotTable properly. Which is exactly what my title conveyed. Do you have any recommendations?

    I think PT should work. Can you upload workbook and show what's wrong?

    Edit: And no, "Am I using the correct feature" can not be proper title as per forum rules it doesn't describe a problem. Unless you want simply yes/no answer?

    Re: Unsure if PivotTable is the correct feature

    Masterlist.xlsx

    On the Book included there are several tabs. The first tab is the best I've gotten it to appear thus far; not all of the data has been entered thus far, but enough to show the basics of what I'm attempting to do.

    In the "MasterPivot" sheet, the format of the left hand side is exactly how I want it to look (also seen in 'Example 2'). However the columnal portion has been presenting me with a slight issue, currently it's sorted into:

    Latex/Sterile --> Latex/Non-Sterile --> Non-Latex/Sterile --> Non-Latex/Non-Sterile

    This is way too in depth, I would like the top bar to simply show

    Latex --> Non-Latex --> Sterile --> Non-Sterile

    At the end of the Book I included the two sheets "Example 1" and "Example 2" to display the visual that I'm going for. The data in those sheets has been simplified to show only the relevant portions. My goal is to make it easier on the eyes to read the list, since looking through a hundred thousand "gloves" is simply distracting and counterproductive.

    Side note: Was this worded well? Or could it be more clear?

    I would filter them from the list.
    But maybe this macro would help?
