Theory question: Creating regular looking charts with negative numbers

Hi,

I create a number of charts that feed from negative figures (because of accounting theory - I won't bore you with the details). To plot a 'regular looking' chart (i.e. how I want it to look) I usually just use a column alongside the source data and insert a formula to reverse the sign. I find it hard to believe that Excel doesn't accommodate a natural solution to this problem.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I've attached a basic example of my usual charting approach.

As your numbers are negative, Excel naturally interprets them so but you can make them appear positive by putting the vertical axis values in reverse order and putting the Horizontal axis crosses at 'Maximum axis value'. Then custom number the veritcal axis to hide the minus sign. Whether this will work with all your charts I don't know but it seems OK with the sample line chart. See attached.
