PivotChart Query: How to summarise data by month on the x axis

    Hi,

I suspect there's a simple solution to this but once again i'm struggling to find it. Basically I have budgeted sales for a period and I want to plot the actual sales coming through over time. I've part achieved this on the attached example but the x axis looks a mess. How can I amend it so that it's summarised by month? I've tried amending the number format in the pivot table but this just brings back multiple instances of the same month, e.g. Apr, Apr, Apr, May, May May, etc. I've looked in the axis options but I can't see any way of amending the major unit to every month?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,

Just right click in the PT, choose the 'Group' option and select Month & Year.

Re: PivotChart Query: How to summarise data by month on the x axis

    Hi,

The problem with grouping is that I only get one figure plotted per month. I'm hoping to create a chart where I can see the cumulative sales plotted on a daily basis in order for me to identify any abnormal movements.

Is this possible with a PivotChart or should I look into going down the regular chart route?

    Regards,

    Mike

    Hi,

Your OP asked that sales be summarised by month which is why I suggested the Grouping method - I hadn't actually spotted that your numbers already seemed to be cumulative.

Why not just filter out of your data a separate table picking up the Sales on the last day of each month and then use this subset table as a pivot table/chart

Apologies i'm not sure i'm explaining myself correctly? I've amended the attached example and the 'Regular Chart' tab shows what i'm trying to achieve and the 'PivotChart' tab shows the closest I can get to replicating it using a PivotChart.

Personally I'd prefer to use a PivotChart because it makes refreshing the report easier. Is it possible?

perhaps format the row field in the pivot as mmm then set the x axis interval, and tick mark interval, to 31 in the axis options of the chart-it won't be exact but will look ok
