Question Charting Durations of Time in Excel

    Hello -

I'm trying to create a chart that would display stop times of fleet vehicles throughout the day. The report data contains the date of the stop, the start time, end time and duration of the stop. On the X axis I need to show the time of day from 4:00 am (bottom) to 11:00 pm (top) and on the Y axis I need to show the date. The plotting is where I'm hitting a wall because I cannot get Excel to tie the data points of start and end times together. I would like to have the duration represented by a point (start time) with a connected line to another point (end time) representing the duration.

The major issue in addition to the charting is the time/date formats not playing nicely with the charts I'm trying to build.

I've included a sample of the data that I'm receiving to create the report. It is attached and was simply copied and pasted as values.

    Thanks in advance!

Re: Charting Durations of Time in Excel

First you need to plot just the time for start/finish, that is remove the date.

Then you need to create a start and finish point for the scatter chart to plot. in order to get gaps between the lines you need to have empty cells.

So build the chart data table using the formula with helper columns for data point location.
Then in column K you need to remove all the #Value! errors by using CTRL+G > Special > Formula > Errors.
With those cells selected delete the formula.
