Need to create chart to track progress against tasks

I have a simple table similar to the example below:

TASK EFFORT(days) STATUS
Task1 5 In-Progress
Task2 3 Completed
Task3 4 In-Progress
Task4 5 In-Progress
Task5 1 Completed
Task6 7 In-Progress
Task7 9 Not-Started
Task8 2 Not-Started
Task9 6 Not-Started


I would like to acheive the following:
1. Have chart which shows all the tasks with a segment for each task representing effort
2. Have a second chart which shows just three segments, one each for Completed, In-Progress and Not-Started
3. Ideally, I would like to somehow be able to visualise which tasks have been completed

I can achieve 1 and 2 by creating separate tables. I cant work out how to create the second chart using just the original table, however, this isnt essential. I can not work out how to achieve point 3 at all. I am using Excel 2010.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it have to be a chart? I'm doing something similiar at work, and I'm using conditional format to keep tabs on what has been completed/in progress/ not started. so i'm using a traffic light system, if its complete, the background of that cell is blue, if its on target to finish by its target date, backgorund of cell is green, if its not on target then yellow, if way off target its red. try that!

yeah, thats what i did, without the pie chart. i jsut added a filter to that column, so i can see which tasks are at which stage

Wow, that was quick. Thats pretty much what I already managed to do, although the Status pie chart tracked amount of Effort completed (i.e. the sum of effort done on completed tasks) rather than just number of tasks (I used SUMIF rather than COUNTIF to acheive this).

The two things I was hoping to find out were:

a) is it possible to just create the chart using a single table, as opposed to creating a second table and generating the chart from that. Its not important as I can create the second table and just hide the them.

b) Is it possible to generate some sort of chart within a chart (like pie of pie) to show that the Completed items are made up from a specific list of tasks. The pie of pie function appears (to me) to just 'explode' some aggregated data that would have just shown up as separate smaller segments in the main pie chart. I would like the main pie to show the percentage of each status but generate a pie in pie showing how the completed tasks are divided up in terms of effort.
