HELP! Do not know what kind of graph to use?

    HELP NORTH.xlsx

I do not know what kind of graph to use for my data. I have age intervals of men, women, and unknown, and their burial types.. this is for my anthropology class. How do I incorporate all these variables? I have attached my data to this thread. Please help.

First, it sounds like you haven't quite figured out what you want to show. What do you want to communicate to the reader? If you wanted to present a chart drawn with a pencil on a piece of paper, what would you want it to look like? Figuring out how to do it with Excel is the second step.

I would reorganize your data, as shown in the attachment in Sheet2. This is an example of how you can plot all the data on one chart, but I'm still not sure that is what you need. See pivot table and chart on Sheet3.

Talking Re: HELP! Do not know what kind of graph to use?

    Jeff,

I need to show the number of burial types for males, females, and unknown for this North population. many males, females, and unknown. I think the data sheet you sent me back does this. I have two more populations to include. Could I include them somehow into this graph or keep them separate?

Thank you for all your help,
    Alexandra

Re: HELP! Do not know what kind of graph to use?

They can be added to the same graph, although as you can see this one graph is really three graphs glued together in one frame.

Another option would be to create a 3D surface graph, sample attached. That gives a better presentation when you have this many variables.

What do you want to emphasize? Do you want to show any kind of trend or correlation?

I am trying to figure out if there is similarities or patterns with burial types related to age or *** or both.

Re: HELP! Do not know what kind of graph to use?

The first step was to modify the tables by inserting a column for gender and combine them on sheet1. If you look at sheet1 and compare it with your sheet1, you will see exactly what I did. I also added leading zeros to the 1-4.9 and the 5-9.9 so that they would sort in correct order.

Once I had modified the data on sheet1, I selected all the data including the remaining header row (all others having been deleted along with the totals rows) and on the Insert Tab, clicked on Pivot Table.

Now, on sheet2 click in the Pivot table then click on the Options tab and click on Field List to show the field list. Click on Change Data Source and expand the data range so that you can add more data to the table on sheet1.

In the top area of the field list all of the headings from sheet1 are present. I dragged each field in the order presented into the appropriate box at the bottom of the Field List dialogue. The table is automatically created for you.

On the Design tab, Report Layout, I selected TABULAR as I find it easier to see the organization of the data. I then clicked on Subtotals and chose to not show them. This makes for a "cleaner" chart appearance.

To get the chart, just select the data in the Pivot Table (don't select the headings or the totals row). Click on the Insert tab and select Column. I chose the first column chart offered. Right click on the grayed headings at the top of the chart and choose to not show the Pivot Table headings. This will remove all of them from the chart. Size the chart to make it readable.

When you make changes to your data, right click in the Pivot Table and choose REFRESH. The Pivot Table will be refreshed with your new data.

To change the data presented in the chart, click on the Gender filter in the Pivot Table and choose the gender that you want. All data concerning that gender will be presented including changing the Column Chart that you created. To change back, click on the Gender Filter and select ALL.

I hope that this explanation isn't too messed up to follow....its early and I am still half asleep....LOL

I suggest that you post your questions here and if you want to bring them to my attention, send me a Private Message. I see most of the posts to this area.

I don't want to steer you away from using the forums here because they are set up to answer your questions and I must admit that there are many people here who are far superior to me when it comes to knowledge.
