    Secondary non-proportional x-axis on chart (Excel 2013)

I'm trying to do the following. I have a scatter plot where I have some y vs x data plotted. However, I would like to add a secondary x axis which is basically 1/x, i.e. it is not proportional to the other axis, but it is related. I don't want to add another actual series of data, just the axis (though maybe the solution involves adding an extra "fake" data series). Is this possible in Excel 2013? Ideally the secondary axis would appear on the other side from the primary, but if it can only be done on the same side that's fine too. Thanks!

Either way, you end up adding a second data series, so I'm not sure I see any advantage to adding a dummy series over plotting the data as a second series.

Using a dummy series is basically a variation of this arbitrary axis technique http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Charts/ArbitraryAxis.html Create a fake data series, plot it on the existing axes, label the data points as desired. This approach might make it easier if you want to make sure that the max min major minor axis values on secondary axis line up with the corresponding values on the primary axis.

the alternative is to calculate 1/x, add a 2nd data series that plots y vs. 1/x, then add the secondary axes. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...149.aspx?CTT=1 Left to its own devices, Excel will not automatically force the max min major minor values on the secondary axis to line up with the corresponding values on the primary axis.

A non-excel alternative is to use 3rd party graphing software. Most that I have seen can define secondary axes as some function of the primary axis.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually had already tried to implement the secondary axis technique, but in Excel 2013 there is no "Layout" tab. Do you know how to add a secondary horizontal axis in 2013? I was able to add a secondary vertical axis.

I was going to do this in MATLAB, which can do secondary axes, but due to the way my data is arranged the appearance isn't too nice for my application.

If it is not the same as in 2007, then I don't know. Put "add secondary axis" into your version's help files and see what it comes up with.
