    Pivot Table Multiple Row Labels?

Is it possible to have two Row Labels showing in a Pivot Table, instead of one showing as a sub-category of the other.

I have a spreadsheet that shows the status (Design, Development, Testing, Live), owner and engineer for software. I currently have to have two separate pivot tables:
    1) showing count of software in each status for each owner.
    2) showing count of software in each status for each engineer.

If I try to combine the two pivot tables into one I get this sort of output:
    .........................|..Design..|..Dev..|..Test..|..Live
    Owner A............|......5......|....6....|.....7....|....8
    ....Engineer A.....|......1......|....2....|.....1....|....2
    ....Engineer B.....|......2......|....3....|.....4....|....3
    ....Engineer C.....|......2......|....1....|.....2....|....3
    Owner B............|......3......|....2....|.....4....|....0
    ....Engineer A.....|......1......|....1....|.....1....|....0
    ....Engineer C.....|......2......|....0....|.....1....|....0
    ....Engineer D.....|......0......|....1....|.....2....|....0

But what I want to be able to see is this sort of output:
    .........................|..Design..|..Dev..|..Test..|..Live
    Owner A............|......5......|....6....|.....7....|....8
    Owner B............|......3......|....2....|.....4....|....0
    Engineer A.........|......2......|....3....|.....2....|....2
    Engineer B.........|......2......|....3....|.....4....|....3
    Engineer C.........|......4......|....1....|.....3....|....3
    Engineer D.........|......0......|....1....|.....2....|....0

Is it possible to do this in a single pivot table?

New to this forum so afraid I don't know how to upload...

Ignore that, I've worked it out. Attached is hopefully an example of what I'm trying to do, can't upload actual spreadsheet as confidential information in it.

Still not had any guidance here, I'm starting to worry that it's not possible. Would really appreciate a helping hand if anybody can. :D

    kopite,

pivot tables operate in a hierarchical drill-down concept. Owner A is the highest category. Several items for Engineers A to D fall under owner A. Another high category is Owner B, with another set of items for Engineers A to D.

You can not group all high level categories first, and then lump all low level categories together. That breaks the logical flow of the hierarchical pivot table model.

You can, of course, create a pivot table that sums the values just at the owner level.

then, create a second pivot table that sums the values at the Engineer level. If you need to present this data in a contiguous table, you can create a new Excel table and reference to the pivot table values with formulas (=PivotTableSheet!A1)

    cheers

Thanks teylyn, that was what I feared but don't know the technical concepts behind pivot tables, that's why there are experts like yourself!

Re: Pivot Table Multiple Row Labels?

    Hello,

I also have an issue with multiple row labels. I would like to have 2 row labels, but side-by-side.

When I add 2 row label fields on to the pivot table, Excel 2010 gives me something like this, both fields in a single column:
    1.PNG
However, what I'd like to get is a table like this, both fields side-by-side in the row labels are (e.g. in two adjacent columns):
    2.PNG

What specific layout option will let me do that? I appreciate if anyone can guide me on this.

    Thank you!

Alright, I figured this could quite simply be done by switching to Classic layout.
    But what if we couldn't?
