    Pivot table field placement/layout problem

    Hi all!
I am trying to condense temperature data taken every hour for years by way of a pivot table. To give it meaning for my work I would like to find daily and weekly averages, mins and maxs. I attached an example spreadsheet.
When i try to drag and drop or insert by way of wizard->layout the Date-Time variable into the Row Fields section it will not show up. The only part of the table it will drop into is the 'Data Field' section.

I am using excel 2008 for Mac.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Pivot table field placement/layout problem

    Hi HannahKirk,

I'm using Windows & was able to get that field to go into the other areas.

    What I did was as per the below steps;

Copy the data & Paste Special into a new workbook & worksheet

    Create the pivot from there.

I found your formatting & other settings were stopping me from getting it to work.

If there's a reason to have that formatting, try to add it after you've created the Pivot.

Hth thanks for you help but I still haven't had success!
After copy and pasting the data into a new workbook I still came across the same problem. Do you think you could be more specific as to what my formatting and setting errors are? I don't know what to change. I do not need to format the data in any particular way.

here is a more specific example, can you get this pivot table to work correctly? And if so what did you do?
I really appreciate the help! Thank you!

Re: Pivot table field placement/layout problem

    Hi Hannah,

I noticed you have a page layout applied & also page breaks.

These may be affecting the Pivot table.

I've attached a file of a working Pivot.

I copied your data, pasted (Special Values) into a new workbook & created the Pivot.

    See how you go.

Btw, Hth means Hope This Helps.

Re: Pivot table field placement/layout problem

Dear Btw, Kidding. Ha well, Hth is new to me. Tech speaking, I am not of my time...

I tried in another worksheet using Paste Special->values I still came across the same problem (and other paste special versions). Additionally, when I tried to save your Pivot_format file it came up with a warning message that the contents are not supported by excel 2008 for mac, as well as something about the Pivot settings. So my conclusion is that my version of excel won't preform this action? Or it has something to do with my personal settings, which I went through and couldn't find anything amiss? I'll try this same thing on another computer if I can get my hands on one.

Thank you again for your help and for the shorthand lesson.

Re: Pivot table field placement/layout problem

It's a bit hard to tell what's happening between Mc & Windows & if that's obscuring the problem.

If you can borrow a Windows PC it might help you see hoe Windows deals with it.

    Good luck
