    Charting with dates!

    Hi all,

    First post to this forum...

I'm trying to show 2 timelines side by side. I'm not too fussy how we go about it but I'm falling a bit short in my charting knowledge to acheive what I want. I have two columns of data, both contain dates.

The frst column contains a list of dates which are 6 April on consecutive years (ie. UK tax years).
The second column is a series of less consistent dates which overlap the more consistent tax years in the first column. These are to be amended by the user as needed.

    See attached for an example.

I don't mind if the tax years form the x axis of the chart, and the "PIP dates" column is plotted against that. Alternatively, to have "tax year" and "pip dates" plotted as two separate bar charts would be fine too. I just want to show the overlapping dates graphically, like a timeline. Excel isn't great at dealing with dates and I'm coming up short! Any help gratefully received.

    Thanks

Thanks Andy, that's brilliant. Definitely sufficient for what I need. I can tweak that to make it work for us.

Would it be too complicated to explain how you did it?

    Thanks again
    Steve

using the new data layout in E3:G27 create a line chart with markers.

    Format vertical axis Min=0, Max=2, Major Unit=1.
Format Tax year series. No line, marker circle sized 16. Marker fill White.
Format PIP periods series. No Line, marker circle size 10.
