Pivot Table External Data Source - xlsb size limits

    Good day,
I am using pivot tables as dashboard reports. The pivot table is in a workbook (xlsx/xlsb) on the user's PC - the data source is a file in a network location. The data source can be 10,000 to 100,000 rows of data.
For size reasons I'd like to use xlsb as data source, but when the table size is more than ~50,000 rows, my pivot tables won't refresh.
I have no trouble with a pivot table of that size from xlsx data source, but it's pretty slow.
Is there a file size/row/column limitation to xlsb as data source - or does anyone think it may be a setting or network issue?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Jason

I am experiencing this exact issue and cannot find a solution. When I externally connect to my data file in xlsx format my pivot refreshes just fine however when I connect to the same data file in xlsb my connection will not refresh.
