Is it possible to group my data as shown in example 2 but without rearranging the cells as in example 1? All of my data is in the arrangement show in example 1 and transposing it would be time-consuming.

You need the data in that layout to get the chart you want.
But you can use formula to alter the layout of the data.
Hi Andy. Thanks very much. That formula is diabolical but I've almost figured it out! Having to use that arrangement for my data raises another problem though. When I add error bars what's the most efficient way to set them to use the calculated standard deviations?
When the data are arranged as in example 1, the errors bars can be set *relatively* easily but with data as per example 2, the errors bars are split into three sets which have to be defined separately. A process that already takes too many clicks IMO becomes considerably crushing!
